ABOUT ME

Before launching a career as an author, she worked as a school teacher in Maryland and Virginia.

Born on August 3, 1961 in Topping, Virginia, to a waterman and secretary, S.K. Long dreamed as a child of being a professional musician. Upon graduating from the College of William and Mary, she taught for one year. S.K. Long postponed pursuing a European music career, married her college sweetheart, and started a family. After intense introspection, she matriculated at Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College in Maryland where she graduated with a master’s degree. S.K. Long moved to Central Virginia and has taught for over two decades.

Several years of family discussions about her paternal family history inspired intense ancestry research. Late nights, long weekends, and working vacations culminated hours of work with her first novel, Confederate Like Me. Several months of editing resulted in the 2014 publication of the book.

While completing final proofing of Confederate Like Me, S.K. Long began her second novel. The Sing Shack is a prequel to the first novel and introduces Essex County, Virginia’s post Civil War community and her paternal great great grandparents, one of Virginia’s most prominent blue blood families.

S.K. Long lives with her husband and two children, George and David. The family spends time in Locust Grove, Virginia and her childhood home in Middlesex County, Virginia.

In addition to teaching and writing, S.K. Long enjoys fishing on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay on her father’s boat. She supports Feed The Children and So Others Might Eat. She enjoys following her husband’s college band, The Big Dogs, and playing in his second band, Bad Hotel.
